One of my favourite songs by CCM artist Joseph O’Brien is “Camouflage.” I feel like since the spread of social media, particularly YouTube, Instagram and Tik Tok, people are comparing themselves to others even more so than in the past. It is so easy to just turn on an app on your phone and scroll through a feed of finely curated content that claims to be natural. Such an activity can be addicting and, therefore, can have serious effects on one’s mental health. This is what “Camouflage” is about: trying to meet social expectations in order to be accepted by others, while also understanding that by doing so one is only feeding one’s, and society’s, addiction to the judgment and opinions of strangers.
