This critically acclaimed American sitcom, which is streamable on Disney+, spans 176 episodes over the course of eight seasons. Its intense popularity has birthed not only one, but two successful spin-off series: Mixed-ish (36 episodes over two seasons) and Grown-ish (85 episodes over five seasons, with a sixth season expected to premiere in 2024).

Black-ish centres around a Black family living in a “white neighbourhood” in the United States. Despite the heavy topics that the show brings to the audience’s table, it remains humourous and light, provoking thought while also evoking laughter.

WHAT TO LEARN

Due to the show’s length, there are many opportunities for English learners to be exposed to a variety of repeated linguistic and vocabulary elements: American English, AAVE (see Black Girl Magic post), American culture, humour, slang, idioms, expressions of opinion, identity, racism, social justice, white privilege, relationships (coworkers, family, parent-child, marriage, dating), work and career, success, school, and so much more…! As such, this aids English learners in being better able to understand, memorize, adopt, and produce more natural English language expression.
